Review summary from DPReview

DPReview Silver Award

July 2016
The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II is a well-designed enthusiast compact that’s a pleasure to use. It offers a versatile focal range, very good image quality, a large buffer for continuous shooting and 1080/60p video capture. Sharpening and noise reduction in JPEGs are heavy-handed, and battery life still needs work, but aside from those issues Canon has done an impressive job with the second iteration of the G7 X.

Personal takes

Carey RoseCarey RoseDPReview
The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II is well-built and engaging to use. The tilting touchscreen is responsive and handy for working at low or high angles, and though you will want to keep a spare battery at hand, the image quality and color rendition from the large 1″-type sensor is excellent.
Jeff KellerJeff KellerDPReview
The PowerShot G7 X II has excellent ergonomics and is generally a pleasure to use. I’m not thrilled with its JPEG quality, so-so lens or battery life, but it’s still a camera I’d want in my pocket for a day trip or a night out.

Reasons to buy

  • Fast, versatile lens: With a useful 24-100mm equivalent focal range and F1.8-2.8 maximum aperture, the G7 X’s lens is well-suited for low light photography. When combined with the camera’s 1″-type sensor, you also get more control over depth-of-field than typical compact cameras.
  • Solid image quality: The G7 X Mark II’s photos have vibrant color and plenty of detail, though you’ll need to shoot Raw to get the best results.
  • Fast burst shooting: The G7 X II can fire off Raws or JPEGs at over 8 fps with locked focus and exposure and 5.4 fps with continuous AF. A deep buffer allows users to take over 20 images per burst.
  • Articulating LCD: The camera’s 3″, 920k-pixel LCD can flip upward 180 degrees for selfies, tilt downward for overhead shooting, or anywhere in-between.

Things to consider

  • Strong noise reduction and sharpening removes detail in JPEGs: The JPEG engine in the G7 X Mark II applies heavy noise reduction and sharpening, reducing fine detail in images.
  • Subpar battery life: While battery life numbers have improved since the original G7 X, most of its peers can take a lot more shots per charge.
  • Unresponsive after bursts: After shooting a burst of images users may have to wait 15 seconds before they can enter playback mode or adjust camera settings.
  • No electronic viewfinder: There’s no electronic viewfinder on the PowerShot G7 X II, unlike on some of its peers, so shooting in bright light may be challenging.
